About US

BRIEF HISTORY

The Institute of Applied Medical Sciences, (IAMS) was conceived by Michael A.G. Boyo, Medical Laboratory Technology lecturer at the University of Buea, Soppo Ngwa USA, and Anthony Boyo USA, and founded by the former, to reduce the rate of unemployment among nurses, medical laboratory personnel and other allied health professionals in Cameroon. We held seminars in 2002, 2003 and 2004 to sensitize unemployed and underemployed nurses in Cameroon about job prospects for nurses in the USA and train them to take the CGFNS/NCLEX-RN examination, a requirement for foreign trained nurses wishing to work in the USA. In keeping with continuous progress in academic pursuits, we opened our doors to train first level general nurses and medical laboratory technicians to Associate Degree level in 2005 and 2007 respectively.

In 2007 and 2008, we won a British Council grant to develop a pre-registration nursing curriculum in Cameroon and were accredited by the Minister of Higher Education to train HND Nurses and Allied Health Professionals in Cameroon respectively. We extended in 2012, to include the Higher Institute of Applied Engineering and Business Studies (HIAEBS) with strong emphasis on entrepreneurship. We are officially in partnership with the University of Buea, University of East Anglia and University of Texas Medical Branch to train for Bachelor’s Degrees in Nursing and Allied Health Professions and Brookline College USA for Masters in Nursing Education.

Gwendoline Mochia Toh-Boyo, Anembom Patricia, Pamela Akem, and Esoh Godfrey Nji all made sure our humble start was a family one.
