What Our Students Say

Hear from Our Successful Graduates

HIAMS gave me more than just training; they gave me a 2-year fully funded scholarship and a chance to change my life when I had no means to chase my dream.
The solid foundation I received, both in theory and practical skills, shaped me into the confident and competent sonographer I am today.
With the knowledge I gained, I now serve as a lifeline for the most vulnerable in my community, providing affordable and timely ultrasound services that help save lives and bring hope to families.
I’ll always be grateful to HIAMS for believing in me and equipping me to make a real difference.

From HIAMS Graduate to Band 7 Sonographer in the UK – The Inspiring Journey of Doris Ojage

At the Higher Institute of Applied Medical Sciences (HIAMS), every graduate carries a story of growth, resilience, and impact. One such inspiring story is that of Doris Ojage, whose journey from Buea, Cameroon, to London, United Kingdom, reflects the transformative power of HIAMS training and education.

Academic Foundation at HIAMS
Between 2014 and 2018, Doris pursued both her Associate Degree and Higher National Diploma in Ultrasonography at HIAMS, Buea. During her studies, she not only gained clinical expertise but also demonstrated strong leadership, serving as a class delegate and group leader during freshmen orientation. HIAMS, she notes, laid a firm foundation for her career: “HIAMS gave me not only solid academic training but also leadership, discipline, and confidence that continue to shape my journey.”

Continued Education and Professional Development
Building on her foundation at HIAMS, Doris recently completed her Bachelor of Science Degree (BSc) in Medical Diagnostic Imaging, strengthening her academic profile and opening new pathways for advancement. With a keen interest in continuous learning, she is preparing to pursue postgraduate studies that will enhance her specialization and broaden her career opportunities.
Her academic and professional growth reflect a commitment to lifelong learning—a quality she attributes to the culture of excellence nurtured at HIAMS.

Professional Career Achievements
Doris has accumulated a wealth of clinical experience across multiple institutions in Cameroon and the UK. Today, she works as a Band 7 Sonographer with Healthshare, Northwest London, where she ensures high-quality ultrasound services, collaborates with multidisciplinary teams, and upholds professional and ethical standards in diagnostic imaging.
Her journey has included roles as a freelance sonographer in Douala, a hospital-based sonographer in Foumban and Kumba, and a teaching instructor at HIAMS. Each experience has sharpened her technical expertise, leadership abilities, and passion for mentoring the next generation of medical imaging professionals.

Leadership and Community Impact
Beyond clinical practice, Doris is committed to advancing the field of medical imaging globally. She is the Founder of Sonography for Community Development, an initiative designed to promote awareness and access to ultrasound services. She has also served as a Social Media Ambassador for Radiology Across Borders, sharing knowledge and educational resources with wider communities.
She is an active member of both the British Medical Ultrasound Society (BMUS) and the Cameroon Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers, reflecting her international engagement and professional credibility.

Future Career Prospects
Looking ahead, Doris is focused on advancing into management and leadership roles within diagnostic imaging. With her combination of academic qualifications, clinical expertise, and leadership experience, she is well positioned to contribute to healthcare delivery not only at the bedside but also in shaping policy, operations, and strategy in medical imaging services.

A True HIAMS Ambassador
Doris’s story demonstrates the global impact of HIAMS graduates. From her strong academic foundation to her leadership roles and future ambitions, she continues to embody the values of excellence, service, and growth.
Her journey is a testament that with dedication, discipline, and a strong foundation, HIAMS graduates can thrive anywhere in the world. Thanks to HIAMS, I am now working in a prestigious hospital, utilising the skills I learned in my course.

Testimonial – Higher Institute of Applied Medical Sciences Buea (HIAMS)
Kelly DIPOKO Senior Primary Care Nurse, Health in Justice UK HIAMS Graduate, Class of 2015

I am proud to be a graduate of the Higher Institute of Applied Medical Sciences Buea (HIAMS), Batch of 2015, where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with Honours. The rigorous academic curriculum especially modules like pharmacology and anatomy combined with a well-balanced approach to theory and clinical practice, challenged me to grow both intellectually and professionally. HIAMS laid the foundation for my entire career.

After graduation, I pursued a Master’s degree in Nursing Education and worked as a nurse educator in Cameroon. My academic transcript from HIAMS was recognized internationally, allowing me to sit for the NCLEX in the United States without any additional coursework. I passed on my first attempt and began working as a pediatric nurse in the U.S.

Later, I relocated to the United Kingdom, where the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) approved me to take the integration exams. Once again, without any further training, I passed on my first sitting. I have since worked in palliative care and currently serve as a Senior Primary Care Nurse within Health in Justice UK.

None of this would have been possible without the solid foundation I received at HIAMS. The institute instilled in me a strong work ethic, clinical competence, and the discipline to thrive in diverse healthcare systems. HIAMS is an excellent institution if you stay focused and play by the rules, the opportunities are limitless.

My Dear HIAMS Family.
My name is: Nzeh Valentine Akime.

It’s my singular pleasure to share with you my testimony about my experience at HIAMS while I was a student.( 2nd Batch of BNS)

I started my nursing career at HIAMS in 2009 at the former campus at Malingo Street Buea, passed the HND in 2012’upper credit and graduated in 2013 with a BNS second class upper.

Honestly speaking it wasn’t an easy journey for a graduate from the university of Buea in Geology, going back to school again ,more to that everyday sitting in the classroom for lectures with “White Uniforms”.
I can recall during my first week in class I was lost because I started late in November, the lectures were mostly about the history of nursing, basic science etc, then I asked my self if this is the nursing I want to study.

Studies at HIAMS was a blend of both theory and practice (50/50 curriculum), it also encompassed evidence learning, tutorials and bi- semester reflections and portfolio writing at the end of every clinical experience and seminar presentations.
This laid a solid foundation for me to study hard, to be able to work independently, initiate research skills for my career growth and development, boldness to ask questions during lecture and internships.
I was also empowered to become a leader as I was mostly chosen as one of the team leaders for every clinical experience. These didn’t only empower me to lead, but I also learnt to be a good listener, humble and respectful and resilient.

This was achieved through the amazing and powerful team led by Mr.Boyo himself( Founder and Executive Director), Dr. Bassah, Dr. Florence Binwi, Dr.Metuge Edna ( AKA Réme) and our then only motivational speaker, Deputy Director and MLS lecturer Dr.Essoh Godfrey, and Madam Zinabu ( Administrative Assistant)

We went through the thick and thin as nursing students both in school and clinical placements that if I was to put it in writing,it will be equivalent to a 500 pages book , because some people dropped in year 1, and after HND because of fee, and other things. The financial constraints on parents and family members/ sponsors wasn’t easy.

I must personally salute and appreciate Mr Boyo for the fee payment scheme he instituted (installment payments)
He taught us  negotiation skills during one of the reflections.

But we were able to overcome it and graduated with flying colors in 2013. As the adage goes, “there’s light at the end of the tunnel”

1) I graduated from HIAMS in 2013 with a BNS, Today, I hold an MBA in healthcare management (Wollongong University Dubai),  The US NCLEX RN Exam passer and licensed already under Montana Board of Nursing.
